Q: Families might have unique needs and are looking for a more flexible schooling option than traditional in-person schools. How flexible is Utah Connections Academy?
A: There is a ton of flexibility built into our system. Students will have 4-6 lessons to complete each day (approximately 25 per week.) Students can complete these lessons in any order and at any time of the day. Students can take breaks when they need them. Students also have the option to work on the weekends. Students and learning coaches should work together to create a schedule that fits their needs. Students can also work ahead. However, we highly encourage students to only work 1-2 weeks ahead.
There are some aspects of Utah Connections Academy that are not flexible. Students are required, by the state, to attend school for 25 hours per week. Attendance is determined by LiveLesson attendance and lesson completion. Students will have approximately 25 lessons each week that they need to complete.
Q: We're new to online school. What kind of materials will my student?

A: Yes, LiveLessons are recorded. Teachers will provide students with links to the recordings on their websites or message boards!
Q: How often are students connecting with teachers?
A: Not only are regular contacts with your teacher(s) required, they're essential to success. Per the UCA requirements, students must have AT LEAST two contacts with their teacher(s) each month, elementary will have more. Contacts can be phone calls, LiveLessons®, 1:1 sessions in office hours and, when available, face-to-face events. Teachers are available Monday-Friday, with the exception of school-observed holidays or breaks. Make sure your student is satisfying the weekly contact requirement, but know two is simply a minimum. More contacts are highly encouraged! Teachers are available often and can be reached by webmail, texts, calls and in their open office hours.
Q: Are webcams and microphones required?
A: Webcams are highly recommended and should come already installed on a laptop computer. Microphones are required to be able to communicate with the class and teachers in the LiveLessons® setting.
Q: What is the required amount of student attendance in our program?
A: The expectation is that your students complete 25-30 hours a week on school work.
Q: Can students work ahead?
A: Yes! Students can work ahead. This is a great option if a student needs to miss school for a vacation, appointment, etc. While students can work ahead we recommend that they try to stay close to their scheduled lessons. LiveLessons are an essential part of student success and if students get too far ahead (or behind) the LiveLessons will not be as helpful.
Q: Can my students work on the weekends?
A: Yes, work can be completed on the weekends! One of the best parts about our school is that you can make your student's schooling work with your schedule. We have many students who work on the weekends or even at night!
Q: How do tests and quizzes work?
A: The tests and quizzes are built into the student's learning. Most of our courses are broken down into units. Each unit will feature 1-2 multiple choice quizzes and a unit test. Our tests and quizzes are a mix of multiple-choice questions and constructed response questions (students type in their answers) *Note* Some of our teachers may use a different program to facilitate tests and quizzes. If this is the case our teachers will communicate that clearly.

Q: What if my student is sick or has an appointment during the school day?
A: We understand that these events will occur. Your student can watch recordings from any LiveLessons that they missed. Any work that is missed can be completed later that day or throughout the rest of the week. The most important thing to remember with missed days is that the work should be completed as promptly as possible to keep your student from falling behind.
Q: Will my students receive textbooks, reading books, and other materials?
A: All of the materials your student needs to complete the course work are available in the program provided for them so they may get started as soon as they have finished their orientations.
